Colombia – Rose of Sharon School Interactive Library

The Problem

Colombia, at the northern tip of South America, is a country of lush rainforest, towering mountains and coffee plantations. The country has been ravaged by decades of violent conflict involving armed groups, drug cartels, and gross violations of human rights. These conditions have brought a widespread displacement of people who have fled rural violence.

Over 10,000 people have settled in La Playa, on the outskirts of Barranquilla, and live in makeshift homes. International Needs’ Rose of Sharon School has been reaching out to La Playa’s most vulnerable children, providing them with a quality, government-approved Christian education.

The school has over 500 students from pre-kindergarten to high school. However, many of the students lack the resources they need to purchase textbooks or computers. The school is in need of an Interactive Library that would give students and teachers access to up-to-date information on the subjects they are studying in the classroom.

The Project

An Interactive Library at the Rose of Sharon School will greatly benefit not only the students and teachers but also the community at large. It will help create and strengthen reading habits and computer skills in young children. Support adults motivated to learn through evening and Saturday classes. Encourage creativity, and stimulate the imagination of children and teenagers. For Colombia’s youth, spending time at the school library is a very constructive alternative for the use of their free time.

The cost of the project is $76,000.

Your Gift Makes a Big Difference!

  • Your support of the Rose of Sharon Interactive Library will help our students excel in the classroom and place them in the best position to compete in the job market or for that much sought after place at University or College.
  • A school library is central to learning and plays a key role as a place for encouraging innovation, curiosity, and problem solving.
  • A school library plays an important role in the cultural and social life of the school. It can be a central point for engaging in all kinds of reading, cultural activities, knowledge building, and lively discussion.

“A library at Rose of Sharon will help us reach more children in the area who are presently not going to school. It would also benefit the community at large as many have expressed a keen interest in this project. We would like to develop an interactive library that would give users access to reference information, local history, art, culture, scientific innovations, and much, much more.”
Martha Villamizar, Director of International Needs Colombia
