David Marshall

Founder and Co-Host Umoja Journey 2016

Growth, Success, Reputation & Legacy

David Marshall is focused on motivating people to look beyond material success as a life goal towards leveraging that success in order to create legacies of lasting social significance in the world. For well over 15 years, and currently as Executive Director of International Needs Canada, David has served as a champion of sustainable development initiatives in many of the world’s most vulnerable economies. David’s success as the creator of the Umoja journey is the culmination of a lifetime of entrepreneurial thinking and significant achievements in the construction, high-end audio and travel industries.

David has articulated his ideas for influencing businesses and the corporate social responsibility imperative towards a meaningful commitment to economic justice and social change in his book Beyond Charity: How to Increase Profit Through Innovative Strategic Partnership . His most recent book, written in collaboration with Colleen H. Cole, is titled Umoja: A Journey From Success to Significance. It tells the story of the inaugural Umoja Journey to the heart of Africa and paints a vivid picture of the relationships that develop among total strangers sharing life-altering experiences. Perhaps most importantly it shows the changes in perspective that occur as individuals come face to face with the stark realities of social and economic injustice which are often experienced only academically in the developed world.

In his forthcoming work Success…Now What? A New Conversation, David devotes his persuasive energies towards a shift in social values away from the accumulation of wealth as an end in itself. He argues instead for a world in which success, reputation and legacy are contingent on each individual’s personal commitment to the social good.

Simba wandered aimlessly through the grass paying no attention to our friendly faces…

Soon she wandered over to our vehicle and leaned against it, enjoying the heat. Then she slid down and fell asleep. We were stuck for about 45 minutes till she woke up and wandered off.
